| 2006-04-28 // UR introduces ASTEC LOW POWER SWITCHERS WITH NEW TERMINAL-BLOCK CONNECTOR OPTION |

|
LP25 and LP40 Series Models Offer Terminal Blocks in Compact 3”x5” Package
UR (www.ur-home.com) introduces the LP25 and LP40 series from its partner ASTEC, providing a new terminal block option. These models from Astec Power feature a terminal block connection for both AC input and DC output. All of the single- and triple-output models have a 3 x 5 footprint and will deliver from 25 to 55 Watts of total power depending on the model and whether the units are convection or forced air cooled. Featuring universal input from 85-264 VAC, all models have adjustable outputs, remote sense, built-in EMI filtering as well as overload, over-voltage and thermal protection.
Their compact footprint makes them well suited for a variety of low-profile applications including 1U (1.75-inch) rack installations. With their low-profile design, small footprint and flexible connection options, these low-power switchers are suitable for a variety of uses including test and measurement, single-board computers, telecommunications and networking. With a wide operating temperature range from zero to 50°C without derating, the new LPS models can function up to 70°C by derating the output 2.5 percent per degree C. The also comply with IEC EN61000-3-2 harmonic and IEC EN61000-4-X susceptibility requirements. All models have a demonstrated mean time between failures (MTBF) of over 550,000 hours at full load in 25°C ambient conditions. They comply with international safety and performance standards including those from UL, CSA, NEMKO, CB and CE, as well as new ROHS standards.
Samples of the new models are available now. The terminal block option can be ordered using a –T suffix on the model number, for example LPS42-T.

| 2006-04-15 // Coupled Inductors for Use in Step-down DC-DC Voltage Regulators |

|
Allows for faster transient response, lower ripple current per phase, and increased system efficiency
UR (www.ur-home.com) announced the introduction of the industry’s first family of coupled inductors for non-isolated step-down DC-DC voltage regulators from its partner Pulse Technitrol (www.pulseeng.com). The multi-phase coupled inductors are developed and manufactured under a license agreement with Volterra to support Volterra’s VT1165M and VT1115M chipsets which implement its patented coupled inductor topology. This innovative inductor solution provides a highly efficient voltage regulation system with low system cost.
Pulse’s PA131xNL is a family of off-the-shelf, surface-mount, RoHS-compliant inductors, with 2, 3, 4, or 5 phases magnetically coupled together in a single part. Each phase has an equivalent transient inductance (Lk) of 50 nanoHenries (nH) and a magnetizing inductance (Lm) greater than 250nH. Each phase is rated for 40 amps (A) and has a direct current resistance (DCR) of 0.5 milliohms maximum.
These parts can accommodate a 5A current imbalance between phases, ensuring they will operate well in less-than-ideal conditions. The Pulse PA131xNL family, when used with Volterra’s chipsets, provides lower current ripple per phase, improved transient response, and higher efficiency. Their lower transient inductance compared with traditional solutions reduces cost because fewer bulk capacitors are required to support high-transient-load applications such as high performance central processing units and graphical processing units used in personal computers, workstations, and servers, DC/DC power for gaming consoles, video cards, and DDR SDRAM (double data rate synchronous DRAM) memory. In a non-coupled multi-phase DC/DC converter, each phase has an independent inductor.
To improve transient response, the value of this inductor must be reduced. However, this reduction causes an increase in current ripple per phase and a decrease in efficiency. With a coupled inductor topology, all of the inductors are integrated on the same magnetic core and the interaction of the magnetic fields from each phase enables the use of a lower equivalent inductance for faster transient response without increasing the current ripple per phase. The reduction in ripple current in a coupled inductor topology compared to a non-coupled solution is approximately 50% for a 2-phase system, 66% for 3-phase, 73% for 4-phase, and 77% for a 5-phase system.
The PA131xNL family package dimensions and footprint were selected to match Volterra’s requirements to enable second sourcing for the inductors while maintaining a low profile and small footprint. The sizes of the inductors are: PA1312NL – 18.3 x 9.0 x 5.2mm, PA1313NL – 27.3 x 9.0 x 5.2mm, PA1314NL – 36.6 x 9.0 x 5.2mm, PA1315NL – 42.7 x 9.0 x 5.2mm. These products are in production with samples available for approved Volterra customers using the Volterra chipset. The inductors are available packaged in tape and reel and in trays.

| 2006-04-02 // HIGH CURRENT DENSITY RoHS-COMPLIANT POINT-OF-LOAD CONVERTERS PROVIDE SMALL FOOTPRINT SOLUTION FOR SPACE-SENSITIVE APPLICATIONS |

|
Wide choice of models – spanning 3 A to 40 A – all with ultra wide input/output voltage ranges. Highly integrated packaging techniques dramatically shrink module size
UR (www.ur-home.com) introduces five new high current density point-of-load (POL) converters from its partner Artesyn Technologies (www.artesyn.com) that provide dramatic savings in board real estate and external component costs. All five converters are RoHS-compliant members of Artesyn’s C-class family of cost-optimized products, intended for general-purpose computer, storage and networking applications. Three of the new converters are the ultra-small LDO-C series units, offering a choice of 3, 6, and 10 A outputs, while the other two are members of Artesyn’s SIL-C2 family, with 20 A and 40 A outputs. All five converters are the direct result of Artesyn’s ongoing R&D program in very high current density converters – involving specialized component layout, thermal analysis and packaging techniques – and are available with a choice of vertical or horizontal through-hole mounting, and horizontal surface mounting. The 3 A, 6 A and 10 A output LDO-C converters accommodate an input range of 3.0 to 13.8 Vdc and have an output range of 0.59 to 5.1 Vdc. The two higher power SIL-C2 converters have an input range of 4.5 to 13.8 Vdc; the 20 A model – known as the SIL20C2 ¬– has an output range of 0.59 to 5.1 Vdc, while the 40 A rated SIL40C2 has a 0.6 to 5.0 Vdc output range. All five converters provide a flexible and economic solution for powering silicon on densely packed boards, and are also ideal where height is restricted, such as in the latest 1U high rack-mounting equipment.
The converters use a fixed frequency switching topology to maximize efficiency, minimize ripple and noise, and ensure a fast transient response. They all employ an open-frame, single-board construction to simply thermal management, are primarily intended for use in forced air environments, and accommodate an ambient operating temperature range of 0 ˚C to +70 ˚C, with suitable derating. The converters are comprehensively protected against short-circuit and overvoltage conditions and carry a full set of international safety approvals, including EN60950 (TÜV Product Service) and UL/cUL60950.
